Topsy-Turvy Timecops: "Looper" Unveiling This Week

Writer/director Rian Johnson has made quite a name/reputation for himself as a smart and quirky indie auteur with only two films under his belt so far. Johnson's 2005 debut, the slickly constructed teen noir "Brick," garnered a sizable and immediate cult following after wowing Sundance and turning over a tidy profit for Focus Features, sealing the deal for the young filmmaker as an instant Next Big Thing.

His follow-up, "The Brothers Bloom," was less rapturously received by both critics and audiences, though the movie itself is a wildly eccentric, totally entertaining buddy comedy/heist movie/globetrotting adventure and my personal preference between the two. I'm pretty sure Liz Burnell owns it if anybody wants to hit her up. Hope you don't mind me lending out your movies, EB!

Now comes Johnson's inevitable crossover into studio territory, reuniting with "Brick" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the time-bending thriller "Looper," out September 28. Few details have been revealed so far about the project, but this just-released poster delivers a great first (official) impression. The "Looper" logline is a doozy, and the poster makes much more sense in context: "A killer who works for the mob of the future recognizes one of his targets as his future self."

BOOM! And then there's this image, of Rian Johnson on the "Looper" set last year, grinning like Guillermo Del Toro at ComicCon as he poses in what's reportedly the movie's time machine.

Whatever's going on here, I'm into it. Emily Blunt co-stars, along with Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano, Garrett Dillahunt, and that poor girl from "Coyote Ugly" who debuted and peaked all in the same (Tyra Banks) movie. "Looper" is one of 2012's most intriguing prospects, and we'll see what wonder Johnson has conjured with a studio footing the bill. I'll update with a trailer as soon as it's available, which I'd expect in the next week or two now that Film District has kicked off its marketing campaign with this poster.

UPDATE (Monday, 4/09) -- As expected, the first trailer for "Looper" will premiere this week, with iTunes hosting a series of exclusive sneak peeks (essentially just teasers for the teaser...of a trailer for the movie) before unveiling the real deal on Thursday. There's a quickie 51-second first look posted there now, and it's worth a peek if you're still reading. I'll post the official trailer separately on the blog once the ceremonious parade of pre-previews has run its course and I can embed the damn thing here.
