August, like March, has been quite the whirlwind of a month for me, between helping my sister-in-laws move (Carmela is moving back home and got promoted, but she's commuting and now going to grad school online, and Sabina just moved to SF for university and is living in a dorm), not catching a break during weekends, getting a new car (a 2000 Mitsubishi Diamente) that had battery issues, undergoing interviews and finally getting hired.
Yes, after a year of agonizing and struggling with the job hunt, I finally have a full-time job! I am now a Communications Coordinator at the local food bank. I will be primarily doing graphic design work, blogging, social media, and manning the front desk as needed. I love working in nonprofits because I feel fulfilled in contributing for the greater good, and I was an intern at the local Make-A-Wish chapter 2 years ago. I start this job on September 18 (same day as Cecilio and my 6 month wedding anniversary!)
This month, I've been experimenting with different beauty products, such as...
I've been reaching for this palette more often, experimenting with different looks. This is a dupe of the Urban Decay Naked Heat, at literally 1/3 of the cost ($18 vs $54). I talk about it more in this post along with other dupes of Naked Heat, such as Modern Renaissance and Too Faced Sweet Peach.
Tarte Sex Kitten Palette (review)
This has been my main palette of the month. I didn't expect to love it as much as I do, and it may look plain, but you can create stunning looks with this. It's so versatile too. Once in a while, I do like a cool-toned palette like this, which is refreshing because the warm eyes are all in the range.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (review)
This has really helped heal my lips. I can't go to sleep without it, and even then I wear it throughout the day if I a staying in my apartment. I still suffer from dry lips, but I don't know what I would do without it. At the very least, it has helped my lips (and the skin below my lower lip) from drying out more and peeling.
Kokie Nail Polish in "Heavenly"
I received this nail polish months ago in one of my ipsy glambags. At first, I was sorely disappointed with the color (a cornflower blue). This definitely didn't look like something I would wear! Then, the Walmart near where I used to live started selling Kokie products. I picked up another nail polish along with some lipsticks and lip glosses. I eventually gave this a chance and I loved it! The pale shade gives such a nice contrast against my tan skin. The quality is amazing too. It's been a week since I've worn this and the chipping is very minimal: but I also painted one layer, coated with the Essie Matte About You top coat, and then painted another layer to prevent streakiness. It worked! And the price is reasonable at $5, yet it's just as good as Essie or OPI.
Mented Cosmetics Lipstick in "Nude La La"* (review)
My search for nude lipsticks are finally over thanks to Mented Cosmetics. If you don't know about Mented, they are an up-and-coming beauty brand that sells lipsticks and lip glosses for women of color. The 2 CEOs developed the brand after struggling to find lipsticks that suited their skin tone. The shade "Nude La La" has been my best friend all of this month, and I've not stopped using it. Of all of the shades featured in my review, this is the one I've been reaching for the most. Wearing this really means it's my lips but better, darker, and sultrier: it's a medium pinky-brown. I've worn this for everyday wear, eating out and job interviews. This lip shade is extremely versatile, and the creamy formula makes it so easy to wear.
Moschino x Sephora lip glosses in "Hollywood", "Milano", "Soho" (review)
These lip glosses came in a set along with the teddy bear chain necklace. You can pop your gloss on top of the bear's head, wear it and be ready to hit the town. There are actually 6 shades in the set, but I chose the 3 darkest ones as my favorites: Hollywood (metallic copper), Milano (true classic red), and Soho (deep burgundy). But if I absolutely had to choose one, Soho is hands down my most favorite.
MISSHA x Frida Kahlo Tension Pact
I've never tried a cushion compact foundation before, and what better way to try it from an actual Korean brand (where they originated from)? Missha is one of my favorite K-beauty brands, and I love their BB cream. When I found out that they had a collaboration with Frida Kahlo, I had to have the products because I love her too. But I couldn't justify spending $40 on other random crap from Missha just to avoid the $8 shipping fee. Then one time, Missha offered a free shipping day and I went ahead and ordered this! It's medium coverage, and conceals my redness really well. It also brightens and evens my skin tone.
What have you been using in your August beauty favorites?
